OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Rockhampton South Kindergarten we view children as Powerful Learners, Thinkers and Theorisers and Active Citizens. We treasure the joy of childhood: the spontaneous, energetic, curious and imaginative potential of every child. We recognise and respect the Darumbal people as the traditional custodians of the land on which we learn. We honour their rich ways of being, knowing and doing and proactively collaborate to foster mutually positive relations.

Children
We view each child as a unique and capable individual, whose rights and best interests underpin all our practice. Their health and wellbeing are paramount. We are committed to creating a safe, compassionate environment where every child is respected and valued. Children’s interests and potential are thoughtfully nurtured.

Family
Families are the primary and most influential teachers of their children. We are committed to developing and maintaining genuine, trusting collaborative partnerships that honour and share family culture, knowledge, and backgrounds. Recognising that families are the first teachers, we actively support and value their vital role in shaping their child’s learning and development, working together to ensure the best outcomes for every child.

Community
We build authentic relationships with people and place to strengthen reciprocal community partnerships. We work in true partnership with colleagues, families, management committee and communities, where all are respected and actively encouraged to collaborate. We acknowledge, celebrate and value the cultures within our community and that of the wider community.

Educators & Leadership
Passionate and open-minded early childhood educators play a vital role in creating inclusive, respectful, and engaging learning environments, where each child’s uniqueness is valued and supported through thoughtful practice, reflective thinking, and strong partnerships with families and communities. As a team, we engage in active listening, open dialogue, and critical reflection of our practices, guided and supported by our committee and C&K governance.

Environments
We cherish our natural environment and the opportunities this provides for nature play, connection to country and becoming environmentally responsible. Children’s intrinsic love and appreciation for our natural environment is fostered. Children have ample opportunities to engage meaningfully with the natural environment and to participate in learning experiences that empower them as active citizens working toward a sustainable future.

Curriculum & Play
We recognise play as a fundamental right of every child and a vital pathway for learning, development, and expression. Through play, children explore, create, and form meaningful connections with the world and those around them, supported by engaged, responsive, and reciprocal relationships with educators. We engage in reflective practice and professional inquiry to help inform and enrich decision making about children’s learning.
Our ongoing reflection
The RSK philosophy is dynamic and evolving. Through ongoing self-assessment and critical reflection, our philosophy and culture continue to grow in response to the needs of our community. This reflective process ensures that our unique identity is upheld while promoting continuous improvement, so that all children experience high-quality learning and achieve optimal outcomes.
Our Philosophy was reviewed and updated in consultation with children, families and educators in 2026.
